2018 Design Shows
It is always good for the soul to get out of the office and attend industry events and as Sir Jack Cohen once put it, "you can't get business done sitting on your ....". We are already half way through 2018 and it has been a great year with exciting product design projects being delivered and new challenges coming in for the studio to overcome. With so many global design events we need to select which to attend based on their merit, as it is all too easy to become busy fools! Whether the main purpose is to meet our clients or gain inspiration to reshape and take to client meetings, we thought we'd share a list of the design events we are attending this year - and most probably next year as well.
Stockholm Furniture and Lighting Fair
We generally kick off the event year attending Stockholm in February. Isn't it always interesting to see what is happening in Scandinavian design? Of most interest at Stockholm Furniture and Lighting Design Fair are the colours and materials that are coming on trend for the forthcoming year. We are diligent in the format that we feedback to the rest of the office.
Salone Del Mobile. Milano
Milan is always marked in the calendar. This year Mike, who hails from Northern Italy, was able to navigate the show along with the bars and restaurants seamlessly. We find Milan Furniture Show helpful from a lighting perspective as there is such a breadth and depth to what is on show at this April staple.
Clerkenwell Design Week
After Milan we prepare for what is always a great week right on our doorstep - at Clerkenwell. The event has really grown each of the past 10 years, and Jones & Partners have very much grown with the show. It is a great event for us to showcase the products we have designed as our clients generally have exceptional showrooms in the area. This year we had over six products or ranges on show. Needless to say the networking and socialising start early and end pretty late.
Hot on the heals of Clerkenwell Design Week comes NeoCon in Chicago. Gaining an overview of the market trends is vital and the size and scale of NeoCon offers us an exceptional opportunity to do just that. Our diaries fill up early with arranged meetings before the event. NeoCon is a show where real business connections are made and plans are cemented. It is truly a global event and one we look forward to each year.
Fabrik Tag with BASF
Returning after summer vacation, the studio has been fortunate enough to be invited to Fabrik Tag. For us, this is an invaluable event as it gives an insight into Material Science from a first principles point of view. The benefits and use cases for different synthetics are discussed in detail.
Autumn brings the European powerhouse that is Orgatec in Cologne. Similar to NeoCon our diaries always fill up early as we and our industry clients are keen to discuss and examine possibilities for the year ahead. The show always throws up some exciting new progressions and innovations in the Office workspace arena and we enjoy supporting our clients in their showcasing of recent launches.
We attend various events at Brunel University as we continue our support of engaging with academia. Each year we look to take on a student and support their research and product design studies. Most recently we kicked off an exploration into mass lamination of materials to produce customisable layered products.
At the end of August we attend the global electronics exhibition, IFA, in Berlin. At Jones & Partners, not only have we developed the globally successful Aircharge range, but also a Passport for S3.ID. Passport is a location device, designed to withstand a nuclear blast. So it is a chance to view the latest advancements in technology and CE, along with seeking invaluable market feedback on Aircharge new portfolio ideas.
